Let Out Your Inner Aphrodite

Get Yourself Some Pretty Lingerie and Embrace the Goddess Within.

Guys…be honest. We’ve all had a phase where we were obsessed with Greek gods and goddesses? That one awkward period of life where you’d nerd out over the Percy Jackson series and gawk over the thought of having a party with Dionysus, the god of wine. What a dream it would be to indulge in a silky merlot until the sun came up as you watched the waves of Poseidon crash into the ancient Grecian cliffs. (Okay, I’m guessing that was just me…?)

Nevertheless, there is one thing to be said -- nothing was quite as intriguing as the illustrious power of the Goddess of Love, Aphrodite. Her confidence, her aura and the way she controlled desire and love never failed to fascinate me. I’d think to myself-- when I grow up, I want to be Aphrodite.

And while it seems as though these fantasies were just a figment of our imagination, there is no denying this: Aphrodite is within all of us -- beauty is within all of us. And contrary to the belief that a certain version of beauty is necessary in order to be desired, one must remember that your own body was crafted by the gods – perhaps even by Aphrodite herself. So, in light of the new decade, more self-love is without a doubt our most important resolution. That’s right baby! This year, take control of the way you desire yourself and shove that negative self-perception right down the shaft of Hades.

It’s about time you let out your inner Aphrodite, we all know she’s been dying to make an appearance.

One of HOKU’s favorite ways to bring on the self-love is to slather on a golden face mask, turn up our chill shit playlist (full of Summer Walker and SZA, of course), sip on some liquid diamonds aka ice water and throw on a set of alluring intimates. Because nothing makes us feel more powerful than hydrated, glowing skin and the big L – LACE. That said, it’s important to remember that sustainability is sexy – so as we love ourselves, let’s love our planet too. Often, we don’t think about the detrimental impact of something so seemingly minuscule as underwear but more often than not, your favorite lingerie brands are not exactly sustainable – in fact, quite the opposite. Our team set out to find the perfect sustainable lingerie brand that didn’t compromise the confidence inducing qualities of lace. We were shocked to find that sustainable lingerie seemed to be sustainable fashion’s Achilles heel. Lucky for us, we discovered Sofie Andersson, upcycling connoisseur, founder and designer of Anekdot Boutique -- an upcycle brand that creates conscious intimates for the everyday dreamgirl.

Goodbye unflattering, unsustainable lingerie, helloooo Anekdot Boutique. Finally, we’ve found a collection of bras and undies that you WON’T want to take off at the end of a long day. That’s right, we said it – these pieces are all about the feels. Not only are they created sustainably, but they are incredible soft, silky and comfortable too. Talk about a win win. Andersson tells HOKU that many of her pieces are inspired by an ethereal flow indescribable to most. “The best ideas also come when I unwind and flow in nature or in a new culture where everything is new and unknown. Suddenly I feel more myself than ever, and I ́m easily going into creative flow and write loads of ideas. But inspiration can come from anything that surrounds me. It ́s like if I'm breathing in small inspirations from here and there, from music, travels, color schemes, a thoughtful quote or rare vintage details. and when I ́m then sourcing the fabrics the design comes very easily. I basically design while I ́m sourcing the fabrics. Since I ́m designing the other way around, sourcing fabrics first then designing, I need to make fast decision on spot if I buy the fabric or not. If I buy it, it means that I already know roughly what I want to create from it.”

In terms of sustainability, Anekdot Boutique hits the mark every. single. time. The fashion industry often spends so much time creating pre-consumer waste materials from production cut offs, surplus, production errors, miscalculations and unwanted fabrics. Andersson saw this and decided to make a change by bringing new (and incredibly cute) life to these fabrics. “It takes more time and efforts to source these fabrics and produce from them, since we are limited to the amount we find and need to adapt depending on the fabrics. Sometimes cut around holes, sometimes place our patterns on small off-cut bits which takes time and dedication. But we are committed to this and it ́s a part of the designing process and excitement.” And we are totally here for it.

Self-love can take time, but the first step to self-love is embracing the goddess within. A big part of being confident is about being able to say, “Yes, I’m the shit!” without having to say anything, instead it’s a feeling and aura. Something we are all working on here at HOKU. So go ahead, treat yourself to something pretty. You can thank us later.
