Let's Talk About Ethical Jewelry

Why It’s Important And Our September Picks.

An outfit is never complete without adorning yourself with the perfect combination of accessories. Whether you’re going for a bold layered look or a dainty minimalist approach, finding the right piece of jewelry can bring any outfit to the next level. But, how often have we thought about how our jewelry was made? What raw materials were used?  What were the working conditions for the person making our beloved jewels?

The answer is, we don’t always know. When purchasing “on-trend” jewelry from fast-fashion brands, we are often kept in the dark about their process. Luckily, the shift towards a more sustainable industry is making way and now more than ever, brands are becoming more aware of the entire process that goes into our favorite rings, necklaces, bracelets and beyond. Here we have the story of three unique brands from different parts of the country that have gone the extra mile in creating gems that make us look good and feel even better in.

Maui, Hawaii - 'OHI ALOHA is a Maui-based jewelry brand inspired by the beauty of the islands and the warm aloha spirit that surrounds us from the mauna to makai. Designer and founder Ka’ila Young tells HOKU that the Hawaiian culture and language has greatly inspired her work. Her focus on using natural materials and bringing a twist to traditional customs has allowed her to expand on her creative journey through the art of jewelry making.

“In the Hawaiian language ‘OHI means to collect, harvest, select, pick, gather. All words that mean to hui pu or bring together. ALOHA means so much more than what the dictionary could describe - is more than love or a simple greeting to a friend. Aloha is entirely its own fruitage – it’s an attitude and a way of life. I personally want to collect ALOHA from everyone I meet, the ocean, the land, and turn it into something tangible.”

Ka’ila handmakes all of her pieces with materials that she collects around the islands, these include seeds, shells, or kukui nuts. In addition, she also supports local Polynesian ‘ohana by purchasing pearls that are farmed in Tahiti. “Unique shapes and color variety have me in awe. Natural materials are in no way ever the same or uniform which I love because “perfect” is not a word in my creative vocabulary.”

With a mission that’s driven on the aloha spirit and pieces that can add a unique dynamic to any outfit, 'OHI ALOHA is the ultimate go-to for any island (or city!) honeys looking to add a one-of-a-kind sustainable gem to their accessory collection.

Los Angeles, CaliforniaARMS OF EVE is the bohemian-beach jewelry brand we’ve all been looking for. Founded in Australia (and eventually making it’s way to California), Arms of Eve is inspired by and infatuation for the ocean and a focus empowering women through seriously gorgeous pieces! Designer and founder, Kerryn Langer emphasizes that her deep connection to the planet and adoration towards her African heritage are the key factors in inspiring her pieces. Early on, she was drawn to unique tribal textiles and the chic bohemian lifestyle.

“Empowering women is the cornerstone of Arms Of Eve. I grew up around strong independent women who were always working and making beautiful things. My Grandmother was always knitting us incredible pieces and my Mother made all my clothes by hand. Fashion plays a very important role in making women feel comfortable, and confidant too. I love helping women step out of their comfort zone and helping them express themselves through individuality in clothing and accessories. The right clothes, the right accessories make women feel unstoppable!”

From the different kinds of metals to the shells and pearls that are harvested, Langer tells HOKU that she’s made it a priority to use materials that are sustainable sourced.  Beyond the pieces themselves, they are also considerate of how they package their pieces – all the paper is recyclable, their canvas bags are reusable and shipping packaging is 100% compostable. From hand-loomed scarves to hand-made pearl earrings, Arms of Eve’s ethically-made one of a kind pieces will bring you back to your ocean dreams with each wear!

Fort Worth, TexasFrank & Georgia is an up and coming jewelry brand created consciously by ultimate power couple, Aubree and Jared. Their minimal designs and precious jewels are inspired by Art Deco and Mid Century Modern Architecture – oh, and did we mention that all of their gold and silver is 100% recycle and certified by SCS Global Services (this means they are made to LAST)!

“As we were hunting for suppliers for our various materials and gems, we were shocked to discover the effects of buying cheap, plated metals, unsafe and unethical mining practices, how broken the gold and jewelry market actually is. We very quickly decided to set high standards for everything we were to sell. It would be so easy to buy our base materials for less, but the cost it would have on the people who mine the stones, gold, and the communities around that is simply too high.”

Designer, Aubree tells HOKU about how difficult it can be to supply from sustainable sources, but they’ve made it a priority to never compromise quality for cost. She emphasized that fashion helps women feel powerful, especially on the days when they need it the most! To her, jewelry is not only a form of expression, but also her way of helping women feel empowered by doing less harm and more good. With quality and ethics in mind, Frank & Georgia’s delicate pieces can elevate ANY outfit with some southern charm.
