To Our Readers,

During it’s conception, our third issue was meant to be dreamy, enlightening and an ode to all things pleasurable. However, soon after production began, we realized that our way of creating had forever been jolted by what was going on in our world today. From the COVID-19 Pandemic to the rise in social injustices and Black Lives Matter Movement-- nothing about this year was as dreamy as we had imagined it to be. But that’s a good thing. At HOKU, we are passionate about being disruptive and taking the road less traveled. While 2020 wasn’t the year we had hoped for, it was the year that we needed. We’ve done more self-reflection and advocacy for change this year than we have ever done before. More people are becoming educated on the issues that matter and this is only the beginning. As they say, mornings are for coffee and contemplation. Our third issue, Morning Coffee, is an ode to the necessary self-reflection that 2020 has brought upon all of us. A chaotic blend of ideas made worth it by the thought of being able to make change happen.

In one way or another, our favorite blend of coffee is symbolic to us. Representing not only reflection, but motivation and drive. Whether you’re taking it to go as you run towards the subway, or sipping it loosely on your porch every morning -- that first sip will get your day going. It’ll set the tone for you and give you the energy boost you need to make the day your bitch. This issue is meant to be just that, an inspiration for change, an advocate for self reflection and a refreshing blend of content made to change your perspective for the better. Morning Coffee is our first issue shot entirely on film, representing our love for nostalgia and creating beyond the norm. Launched on the night of the Hoku Full Moon, Morning Coffee is a love child of our chaotic ideas, thoughts, bursts of creativity and a rallying call to help you realize that not only do your fashion choices matter, but every choice you make matters.

We went out of our comfort zone for this one, we hope you enjoy our blend. xo

Cheers,
